Alpha

A measure of an investment's excess return compared to a benchmark index. Positive alpha means the investment outperformed; negative alpha means it underperformed.

Formula

Alpha = Actual Return − [Risk-Free Rate + Beta × (Market Return − Risk-Free Rate)]

Example

A mutual fund with alpha of 2 beat the Nifty 50 by 2% after adjusting for risk.
