Finance Dictionary
Recession
A significant, broad-based decline in economic activity lasting more than a few months. A common shorthand is two consecutive quarters of falling GDP, though official bodies weigh employment, income and production as well.
Example
Equity markets often fall before a recession is formally declared and begin recovering before it officially ends.
