Short-Term Capital Gains — profits from selling a capital asset before the long-term holding period. For equity in India: <1 year attracts 20% tax (raised from 15% in Budget 2024).

Example

Selling equity shares bought 8 months ago at ₹2 lakh profit = 20% tax = ₹40,000.
