Finance Dictionary
Volume
The number of shares or contracts traded in a given period. High volume signals strong participation and makes a price move more credible; a move on thin volume is easier to reverse.
Example
A stock rising 5% on ten times its average volume suggests genuine institutional buying rather than a few small trades.
